Description
Monument Valley is a 30,000 acre, Navajo Tribal Park located on the border of Arizona and Utah within the 16 million-acre Navajo Reservation.
Monument Valley was initially a lowland basin and for hundreds of millions of years layers of eroded sediment from the early Rocky Mountains was deposited in the basin and cemented into rock. Then a slow, gentle uplift from the constant pressure below the surface elevated the horizontal strata. 50 million years of nature have worn down the plateau to create the wonders of today’s Monument Valley.
Photographing Monument Valley from Hunt’s Mesa during sunset and sunrise involves a harrowing jeep ride with a Navajo guide, and camping overnight on the Mesa. This shot captured the valley in the early morning light.
